Knox College, located in Galesburg, is a nationally recognized liberal arts college. The college has an active Hillel Club; Jewish students occasionally lead worship services and teach in the Sunday School. Knox also offers courses in Jewish Studies, which community members are welcome to take or audit. Thanks to three endowments to support Jewish Studies, the college also regularly brings visiting speakers, cultural groups and scholars-in-residence. (Two of these endowments were created by gifts from members of Temple Sholom.) Nearby Monmouth College has a chaplain who is supportive of Jewish students on campus, and Western Illinois University in Macomb has an active Jewish student organization.
Affiliated Jewish Organizations
There are currently two active affiliated organizations: the Temple Sholom Sisterhood, which engages in social service projects and fund-raising activities, and the Galesburg Jewish Cemetery Association, which maintains the local Jewish cemetery.
Other Jewish Congregations
Larger Jewish congregations can be found in Peoria (Reform and traditional) and in the Quad Cities (Reform and Conservative), each about 45 miles from Galesburg.
